The Andrew Gordon Stevens Foundation - Service Dogs for Service Members, Veterans, Families
Click HERE to learn about a great animal organization, recently petsltd.org helped me with 2 cats my family rescued from Fort Belvoir, they were left behind and unaltered from a previous family. One of the workers who volunteers there offered to adopt the cats for their medical care, and because of Sophy they have helped me keep these cats alive and helped control the pet population here, Kudos to them. I am asking the TAGSF supporters to find it in their heart to make a donation, it will help make a difference in peoples and animals lives, thanks.

Service Dogs are not machines, they are animals with trained skills, like humans skills which are not practiced or trained with will diminish, familes must include 1 or 2 hours a day to daily service dog training to encompass all skills currently trained with the service animal, and this must include the primary handler.

Too many times I hear reports of service dogs failing to work for a family, and evidence and testimony has show its because the familes have stopped working with the dog, we as humans expect too much from the service animal, when they themselves rely so much on us for cues and execution.

When a service dog goes to releive themselves, the handler should be there with them, when you go out as a family, you should be with them, everything you do, should be done with the dog, consider an appendage, like a finger or a toe, it needs to be attached.

I see mixed reports on facebook from customers claiming how hard their dog works, and then a few months go by and now the dog is not working, when asked what changed the family changed, changed there habits, have not worked the dog, have not even done a thing with the dog, its demand, and attitude is that of a pet now, because it was treated as a pet.

Alaya works so hard, and so much for Andrew, and even with that we are commited to her training 2 hours a day, she is a second mother and a god send to Andrew, because we treat her as a work dog and not a pet, we correct her when she steps outside the normal, and reward her when shes spot on, we work with schools and places of public places to ensure her skills remain intact, and this is what all familes should be doing, failure to do so or lack of commitment means you are not ready for this challenge.

UPDATE : Sorry we have been very busy lately advocating for rights for persons with disabilites, we have also been trying to find a way to sell more raffle tickets for the Kia Soul, please note the Kia Soul will be a 2012 or newer model the winner will be drawn this year.

We have aquired some new technology that will allow us to take credit card payments for raffle tickets, this should assist us in selling the remaining 450 tickets in a more timely fashion, we do appreciate the patience you have had regarding this matter.

To date we have helped numerous familes with advocacy issues through out the country and we strive to do far more in 2012, we have our first year under the belt and have learned many lessons along the way, thanks.

We are hoping to form a Epilepsy support group within the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, please email, or write, or call the FBCH and tell them you want an Epilepsy Support group, we need more people to come forward, we need to stand together with our problems, and together we can make a diference in the lives of people with this disease.

“Epilepsy defines my son’s disease,
however, my son defines his path.
His strength gives me the power to fight.
His love fills my soul with purpose.
His disease gives me the cause to bring light
within the shadows of those wishing to hide.”

Angelo's dedication to Andrew, his son and personal hero.
Getting married to Nancy was the greatest event in my life.  Over time, Nancy gave me, with God's will, two beautiful wonderful children: Andrew and Victoria.  When younger, I  was not always a good person, and helping  people was the furtherest thing from my mind.  My family has changed all of that in me.

When Andrew was diagnosed a few years ago with  Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, I was devastated and saw it as a punishment.
Never did I imagine that over the next four years, Andrew would teach me life changing lessons.

Today Andrew is 12 years old.  He loves the world and everyone in it.  If you are a nice woman (age is irrelevant), he will
very well flirt with you and ask for your phone number.

I am simply a man, but to Andrew I am his world, his daddy and his hero.

Never in my life have I had someone, let alone
a little being, need me as a man and as a person but Andrew does.
He inspires me and often brings me to tears when I see
him trying to do everything his little body will allow.

Andrew makes me want to be a better person, a better father and a hero.  I must never allow anyone or anything tear that from me or from him.  Every door we kick down and every hurdle we overcome is for him and children like him.  No one should ever have to fight for what their children need and my life is dedicated to making sure that never happens.

So to that end I say this;

Andrew, Daddy loves you with all that I am.
Thank you for blessing my life with your presence.
Thank you for being pure and true.
You give me the strength to carry on even in the darkest hours and the most
trying times.
This Foundation is merely an extension of the great things you do for my life and the miracles we will do for others.

May you always be that star and inspiration for other.
May you always remain true.
May others learn from that which you have taught us and many others to come.

This is my love, dedicated to you, Andrew, my personal hero.
Love, Angelo Stevens
